Joe Root has become the first England batter and the 34th overall to complete 8,000 runs in one-day internationals. Root reached the landmark in his 186th ODI innings, scoring 69 off 66 balls during England's tri-nation series match against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi. The knock was also his 49th ODI half-century, underlining the consistency that has defined his white-ball career across more than a decade of international cricket.
Root entered the tri-nation series on October 20, 2026 needing 97 runs to reach the milestone, with England facing Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He completed the feat in the matches that followed, joining an exclusive group of batters from across all nations who have crossed the 8,000-run mark in the 50-over format.
Root had already made history in May 2025 when he became the first English cricketer to reach 7,000 ODI runs, overtaking Eoin Morgan as England's leading run-scorer in the format at the same time. The progression from 7,000 to 8,000 has now extended that record further into territory no England batter had previously occupied.
How does Root's innings tally compare with other batters who reached 8,000 ODI runs?
Root reached 8,000 ODI runs in 186 innings, placing him among the quicker batters to the milestone when measured by innings taken. Virat Kohli holds the record for reaching 8,000 ODI runs in the fewest innings, getting there in 175. Hashim Amla was next, needing 176 innings, while AB de Villiers reached the mark in 182 innings.
Root's tally of 186 innings puts him just behind de Villiers in that ranking. Further down the list, both Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma required 200 innings each to cross 8,000 ODI runs. Root's rate of accumulation therefore compares favourably with several of the format's most celebrated batters, though Kohli and Amla remain well clear at the top of that particular table.
The figures highlight that Root has been a reliable accumulator in ODIs over a long career, even as his primary reputation has been built around his outstanding Test match record for England.
What is the significance of Root's 8,000 ODI runs for England's batting history?
Root's arrival at 8,000 ODI runs is a landmark not just for him personally but for England's batting history in the format. No England batter had previously reached this total, meaning Root has now moved beyond every predecessor who has represented the country in one-day internationals.
He surpassed Morgan's England record in May 2025 when he crossed 7,000 ODI runs, and the progression to 8,000 has confirmed him as the most prolific run-scorer England has produced in the 50-over format. His 49th ODI half-century, scored during the milestone innings, reflects a career built on regular contributions across varied conditions and opposition.
