An unusual officiating moment defined the third T20I at Hnry Stadium, Wellington on October 27, 2026, when the on-field umpires lost track of the ball count during the eighth over. Matthew Fisher was the bowler, and the sheer ferocity of Abhishek Sharma's batting left the officials uncertain about how many legal deliveries had been sent down. With only five balls completed, the umpires chose to refer the matter upstairs, seeking third-umpire confirmation before the sixth legal ball could be bowled.
India completely outclassed the hosts in the contest, chasing down the target in just 13.2 overs to win by six wickets. The result gave India an unassailable 3-0 advantage in the five-match T20I series, ensuring New Zealand cannot level the contest regardless of what follows in the remaining two matches.
How did India overpower New Zealand in the third T20I?
Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive 198/3 on the board. Daryl Mitchell anchored their innings with an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls, an effort that contained five fours and five sixes. Three Indian bowlers shared the wickets, each claiming one dismissal during New Zealand's innings.
In response, the Men in Blue were driven by a sensational century from Abhishek Sharma. He struck 113 off just 38 balls, an innings laced with nine fours and eleven sixes that was as rapid as it was destructive. It was precisely this extraordinary scoring rate that contributed to the umpiring confusion in the eighth over, with so much carnage unfolding in the middle overs that the officials lost their count of legal deliveries. Abhishek was named Player of the Match for his effort.
What does the umpiring incident establish about the ball-count procedure?
The confusion during Fisher's over highlights the provision within the laws of cricket that allows on-field umpires to seek a third-umpire review when they are not confident about the number of legal deliveries completed in an over. In this instance, the officials were uncertain whether a sixth legal ball had been bowled after five deliveries and opted to check upstairs before play resumed. Once the review was completed, the sixth legal ball was duly sent down to close the over.
No further administrative action arising from the incident has been confirmed. Speaking about the match, the emphatic nature of India's win underlined how thoroughly they controlled proceedings from the moment Abhishek took guard. With a 3-0 lead already secured and two matches still remaining, India have made the series their own, and the Wellington contest will be remembered as much for the umpiring curiosity it produced as for the brilliance of the century that caused it.
