Fielding has become an increasingly important part of India's T20I setup, and a select group of players have built impressive catch tallies over the years. The most successful Indian teams in the shortest formats have consisted of impressive fielders, who make catching the ball look easy.
Tilak Varma became the fifth Indian fielder to reach 50 catches in men's T20 internationals during the third T20I against West Indies in Indore on October 11, 2026. India won that match by 14 runs, and Tilak joined an elite group consisting of some of the best fielders who have been part of Indian cricket.
1. Rohit Sharma — 65 catches
Rohit Sharma, India's former captain, leads all Indian fielders in T20I catches with 65 dismissals across 159 matches. His catches-per-innings ratio stands at 0.408, reflecting consistent presence in the field over a long international career spanning a high number of appearances.
Rohit's tally of 65 places him ahead of every other Indian fielder in the format. His longevity in T20 internationals has been a key factor in accumulating this record, with 159 matches providing ample opportunity to build the lead at the top of the list.
2. Hardik Pandya — 64 catches
Hardik Pandya, India's pace-bowling all-rounder, has taken 64 catches in 138 T20I matches, placing him second on the list. His catches-per-innings ratio of 0.467 is higher than Rohit's, reflecting a strong conversion rate relative to the number of matches he has played.
Pandya's dual role as a bowler and fielder means he is often positioned in areas where catches are likely to come. His tally of 64 from 138 matches keeps him just one behind Rohit Sharma at the top of the all-time list for Indian fielders in the format.
3. Suryakumar Yadav — 58 catches
Suryakumar Yadav, India's most recent T20I captain, has taken 58 catches in 113 matches. His catches-per-innings ratio of 0.522 is the third-highest among the five players, and his tally places him third overall among Indian fielders in men's T20 internationals.
Suryakumar reached 58 catches in fewer matches than both Rohit and Pandya, underlining his consistent contribution in the field. As the current T20I captain, he continues to add to his tally with each series India plays.
4. Virat Kohli — 54 catches
Virat Kohli has taken 54 catches in 125 T20I matches, placing him fourth on the list. His catches-per-innings ratio stands at 0.435, and his total of 54 puts him ahead of Tilak Varma among the five players who have reached the 50-catch mark for India.
Kohli's 54 catches have come across 125 matches, making him one of the most experienced fielders on this list. His position in the covers has traditionally been one of the most active fielding spots, contributing to his overall tally in the format.
5. Tilak Varma — 50 catches
Tilak Varma, the left-handed middle-order batter, reached 50 catches in T20 internationals during the third T20I against West Indies in Indore on October 11, 2026. He is the fifth and most recent Indian fielder to reach this landmark in the format.
Among the five players, Tilak's catches-per-innings ratio of 0.757 is the highest, based on 66 fielding innings. He reached the 50-catch milestone in fewer fielding innings than any of the other four players, making his achievement notable from an efficiency standpoint.
