Virender Sehwag, the retired Indian opener whose attacking instincts redefined what a Test batter could achieve at the top of the order, carries a net worth of $40 million into retirement. That figure reflects both a long international career built on record-breaking individual scores and a commercial profile that placed him among the most sought-after faces in Indian cricket during his playing days.
Across 104 Test matches, Sehwag scored 8,586 runs at an average of 49.34 and a strike rate above 82. The combination was almost without precedent in the format: very few batsmen in Test history have maintained that level of scoring frequency while still averaging close to 50 across a full career.
What records did Sehwag set during his international career?
Sehwag's most celebrated achievement in the longest format came in Multan in 2004, when he posted 309 against Pakistan to become the first Indian batsman to reach a triple century in Tests. He did not hold that national record for long. In 2008, he surpassed it with 319 against South Africa, a score that confirmed his standing among the highest individual scorers the format has produced.
His impact in limited-overs cricket was equally significant. In 251 ODIs, Sehwag accumulated 8,273 runs, and in 2011 he briefly held the world record for the highest individual score in the format after striking 219 against the West Indies. That innings placed him in a category of his own among Indian ODI openers. He was also a member of the Indian squads that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 Cricket World Cup, giving him two global titles alongside his individual records.
His approach to Test batting carried a wider influence. By demonstrating that an opener could attack from the first delivery without sacrificing consistency, Sehwag shifted expectations for how the role could be played at international level.
How did Sehwag build his $40 million net worth off the field?
Sehwag's commercial value grew in step with his performances. In 2010, he entered a five-year management agreement reported to be capable of generating in excess of ₹100 crore, which translated to roughly $22 million at exchange rates prevailing at the time. The scale of that arrangement reflected the premium that brands placed on his name during the period when Indian cricket was at its most commercially powerful.
The deal was underpinned by the reputation Sehwag had built through his record scores and his role in India's two global title wins. Brands investing in his image were buying association with a match-winner whose performances had been watched by hundreds of millions of viewers across the country.
When his playing fees, match payments and off-field commercial income are considered together, they account for the $40 million net worth that Sehwag holds in retirement. Among Indian cricketers who played during his era, few matched that combination of statistical output and sustained commercial presence.
