Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has said he will make a call on whether he will play for Chennai Super Kings in the 2027 Indian Premier League before December 2026. The 45-year-old made the statement at a healthcare event held in Bengaluru on October 24, 2026, drawing considerable attention from fans and cricket followers across the country.
Dhoni, who missed the entire 2026 IPL season owing to a calf injury and fitness concerns, indicated that medical tests will be the deciding factor.
"Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season," MS Dhoni was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
"And if I am not, then, you know, you will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them," he added.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has also acknowledged that the decision rests entirely with Dhoni himself.
Why is Dhoni's IPL 2027 availability uncertain?
Dhoni's participation in IPL 2027 is uncertain primarily because of the fitness setback that kept him out of the entire 2026 season. The calf injury that ruled him out raised questions about whether he could sustain the physical demands of another IPL campaign at the age of 45. His comments at the Bengaluru healthcare event made clear that he is treating the matter seriously and will rely on medical assessments rather than sentiment to arrive at a decision.
The broader context adds weight to the question. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, with his final appearance for India coming in the World Cup semifinal in November 2019. That retirement made him eligible to be retained as an uncapped player ahead of the 2025 IPL season, which CSK did. In IPL 2025, his role was that of a finisher, batting late in the order. The 2026 season, however, saw him absent throughout, and CSK failed to make the playoffs that year.
Chennai Super Kings are the joint most successful franchise in IPL history, having lifted the trophy five times. Every single one of those titles came with Dhoni leading the side, in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. After the 2022 season, Dhoni briefly stepped away from the captaincy mid-season before returning when CSK endured a difficult run that saw them fail to qualify for the playoffs for the first time. He then stepped down again after the 2023 title, handing the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK have not advanced past the group stage since that handover.
If Dhoni does clear his medical tests and decides to play in IPL 2027, it would mark a return after a full season away. The franchise and its supporters will be watching closely for any update before December 2026, the window Dhoni himself has set for his decision.
