South Africa's emphatic victory in the second Test against Australia at Gqeberha on October 22, 2026 has placed the world champions firmly in the spotlight. The hosts declared their first innings at 425 for 9, then bowled Australia out for just 99 and enforced the follow-on to secure an innings and 31-run victory. This commanding performance came after South Africa lost the opening Test in Durban, making the response all the more significant as the team drew level in the series.
Temba Bavuma was the architect of South Africa's strong first-innings total, scoring a career-best 179 from 226 balls. The captain's fifth Test century came during a crucial partnership with Marco Jansen, who contributed 85 runs in a 132-run stand for the seventh wicket after South Africa had resumed on 97 for 5. Simon Harmer added 82 to the total, ensuring the hosts built a commanding position.
"Sometimes as a team we forget that the target is on our back and everyone wants to have a go at us. Everyone wants us to show our mettle as the current world champions, and everything that we do is under the microscope," Bavuma said as quoted by Cricinfo.
How does Rabada influence South Africa's team approach?
South Africa have faced formidable challenges since winning the World Test Championship at Lord's last year. The team drew in Pakistan and won in India during their first two series since that triumph, with Australia now presenting another stern test as the world's No. 1-ranked Test side and closest challengers in the championship standings. Bavuma acknowledged that the loss in Durban served as a reality check about the demands of defending their status.
"Our performance in Durban was a realisation of that, but also a realisation of what it means coming up against super strong opposition," Bavuma said.
Kagiso Rabada's return to the field has been significant for South Africa's leadership structure and team approach. The fast bowler's presence allows other players to express themselves freely, with Marco Jansen taking five wickets in the first innings and Wiaan Mulder claiming crucial wickets in the second. Bavuma emphasised that Rabada leads through his stature and actions rather than lengthy speeches.
"He's massive value. When he's on the field, he assumes that responsibility and pressure of leading the attack and I believe it allows everyone else to kind of go about and do what they need to do. A guy like Marco (Jansen) in the first innings, him taking a five-for. And then in the second innings, Wiaan Mulder with crucial wickets. That's what a leader does. KG is not a big guy in terms of speeches. He'll speak whenever he sees fit. But with the figure that he is, you know, he is inspiring in a lot of ways," said Bavuma.
What is South Africa's strategy for controlled aggression?
South Africa's strategy involves controlled aggression rather than needless confrontation with opponents. The team allows certain individuals to engage in competitive exchanges within the rules, but the broader approach centres on playing for the team and executing ruthlessly. Bavuma outlined how this philosophy shapes both team dynamics and individual preparation.
"Part of it is being aggressive in situations, not necessarily having to have a word with opposition or look for fights, but be aggressive in how we approach it: play for the team and be ruthless in doing so," Bavuma said.
How does Bavuma prepare mentally and technically for Test cricket?
Bavuma's own preparation reflects this mindset of honest self-assessment and mental readiness. After returning to form with his career-best century, the captain described how he analyses his performance both technically and mentally to ensure he enters each match prepared for battle. His focus extends to finding rhythm and confidence in the nets before stepping into competition.
"When you're there alone in your room, you can't kind of lie to yourself. You analyse your batting innings. You look at it from a technical point of view, if there's anything that sticks out. From a mental point of view, you tune yourself to making sure that you're ready for battle. You're out to compete," Bavuma said.
The emphatic victory has strengthened South Africa's belief in their ability to handle the expectations that come with being world champions. However, Bavuma recognised that the pressure and scrutiny will only intensify as the team continues to defend its status. The challenge ahead lies in embracing that pressure rather than allowing it to overwhelm the squad.
"From a pride point of view, from a belief point of view, we've definitely strengthened that by being able to perform like this," Bavuma said.
