India's team management chose to rest Jasprit Bumrah from all five ODIs of the New Zealand series, citing workload management as the reason. The series opens at Eden Park, Auckland on November 4, 2026, and concludes in Tauranga on November 15, 2026.
The decision has drawn attention given the timing and the state of India's pace resources. Shubman Gill leads the side for the first three matches, while Shreyas Iyer takes over the captaincy for ODIs 4 and 5, with selectors naming a split squad for the tour.
Here are top 3 reasons why Jasprit Bumrah should have played NZ ODIs:
3. Re-establishing Bumrah in India's ODI core ahead of the 2027 World Cup
The 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup remains the primary target for India's ODI core, and that context makes Bumrah's absence from a five-match series harder to justify. Because one-day cricket demands a specific rhythm of pacing, stamina and strategic variation across 50 overs, sustained exposure in this format is essential for any bowler aiming to be match-ready at a World Cup.
Bumrah's recent assignments have leaned heavily towards red-ball cricket and brief T20 stints, meaning he has had limited opportunity to build the kind of ODI-specific conditioning that a long series provides. Five consecutive matches against a competitive Blackcaps side would have offered exactly the sustained workload needed to sharpen his 50-over skills ahead of the global event.
2. Acclimatising to challenging New Zealand conditions
New Zealand's grounds present a distinct set of challenges: heavy cross-winds, short boundaries and drop-in surfaces that behave differently from subcontinental pitches. The four confirmed venues for this series, Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Mount Maunganui, each carry their own character, and facing the Blackcaps across those conditions is valuable preparation that cannot be replicated in a nets session.
Acclimatising to those environments across multiple matches would have allowed Bumrah to refine his lengths and angles against a batting line-up that is comfortable in home conditions. Sitting out the entire series means he misses that ground-level learning ahead of what could be a World Cup campaign played in varied conditions.
1. Mitigating the current pace attack crisis
India's pace resources for this tour are already under strain. Prasidh Krishna was ruled out of the ODI leg after sustaining a left hamstring injury during the home series against West Indies, with the BCCI confirming the squad change on October 30, 2026. Krishna will undergo a return-to-play assessment and could rejoin the squad for the third four-day match against New Zealand A if cleared.
Mohammed Siraj, meanwhile, has been directed towards India A red-ball duties for the second four-day match against New Zealand A, limiting his availability across the full ODI programme. Nitish Kumar Reddy is part of the squad only for the opening match in Auckland before returning to the India A setup. With Arshdeep Singh also managing a recent shoulder injury, Bumrah's presence across all five matches would have given the bowling unit a proven spearhead on grounds where short boundaries and favourable batting conditions can quickly expose an inexperienced attack.
