South Africa clinched a 2-1 series victory over Australia at Newlands with a 176-run triumph in the third Test played from October 27-31, 2026. Marco Jansen, the 26-year-old all-rounder, emerged as Player of the Series after accumulating 198 runs and claiming 13 wickets across the three matches. The decisive victory at Cape Town marked a significant moment for the Proteas, who reached the top of the ICC Test rankings.
Jansen's contribution to the series win extended beyond his statistics. The Klerksdorp-born cricketer scored 52 in South Africa's first innings at Newlands, striking 7 fours, and took 3 wickets for 60 runs in the same innings. In Australia's second-innings collapse, where the visitors were bowled out for 111 while chasing 288, Jansen bowled 8 overs for 17 runs without taking a wicket. His all-round performance throughout the series, combined with his recent milestone of becoming the third-fastest South African to reach 100 Test wickets in terms of balls bowled on October 26, underscored his growing influence in international cricket.
However, the mental and emotional demands of the series took a visible toll on Jansen. The all-rounder revealed the intensity of his focus during the decisive Test, describing his state of mind as he prepared for what would become the series-clinching match. His reflections on the pressure and sleeplessness that accompanied the high-stakes encounter offer insight into the psychological demands placed on modern cricketers during crucial series moments. Jansen explained the extent of his sleep deprivation during the lead-up to the final Test.
"I probably slept one-and-a-half hours, maybe two. That's because of looking out my window, going to the bathroom, having a coke. I hardly got any sleep, thinking of what we could do, what I could do, what's going to be required, what if things don't go our way …," Jansen said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Relief and collective joy after victory
Once South Africa secured victory, Jansen experienced a complex mix of emotions. The immediate sense of relief, however, gave way to deeper satisfaction rooted in collective achievement rather than individual performance. Jansen emphasised the team-oriented nature of his joy following the series win.
"When we end up on the right side of things, for a split second there's a sigh of relief that it's over," Jansen said.
"But after that there's a really good and excited and pumped feeling, knowing that if I played well I've contributed. And also if I didn't play well I still contributed, whether it was on the field or off the field. This is a team thing. It's not an individual thing, and that gives me a lot of joy and happiness. It makes it very much worth it," he added.
The emotional volatility of the decisive Test
The third Test itself proved to be a tightly contested affair, with momentum shifting between the two teams throughout the five days. Jansen reflected on the unpredictable nature of the match and the emotional rollercoaster it created.
"It wasn't easy. There were a lot of ups and downs; ebbs and flows. It was never a case of one team having the upper hand for an extended period of time. There was a stage where I was sitting in the [Newlands] changeroom and you think, 'Yes! We're in this thing!' And then four wickets fall and I'm like, 'What the hell are we doing?!'," Jansen said.
Jansen's recent ascent to the world's No. 1-ranked Test bowler ranking added another layer to his reflections on the series. The all-rounder acknowledged the surreal nature of his rise while maintaining perspective about his origins.
"No. I just see myself as a lightie [youngster] from Klerksdorp. When I started playing professionally and started my career for the Proteas I never thought of getting into the top 10 bowling or allrounder rankings. Fast forward to now where I'm on top of those lists; firstly it's surreal and secondly, like my dad used to tell myself and my brother [Duan], 'Moenie dat jou kop te groot raak nie [don't let you head get too big]. I remind myself where I come from and what I've had to be to be consistent and perform consistently," Jansen said.
Mental growth and handling pressure
Jansen also reflected on his personal growth as a cricketer and how his experience has shaped his ability to handle pressure.
"How old am I now? Twenty-six? [Correct]. Eight years ago I was in high school, and I was watching these guys on TV doing their thing. Now I'm in Cape Town, where a lot of people are watching us. I'm better prepared mentally if things don't go our way, or if we're doing well, or if I'm batting or bowling well, to stay calm and composed. To handle those situations better is the difference," Jansen explained.
South Africa's series victory came after losing the first Test at Kingsmead by 214 runs. The Proteas bounced back to win the second Test at St George's Park, where Jansen scored 85 off 100 balls and took 5 wickets for 33 runs. The series represented a significant turnaround for the South African team, culminating in their return to the top of the Test rankings.
