Australia's batting line-up has endured a difficult stretch across recent Test matches against Bangladesh and South Africa. Across seven innings in these two series, only one player has crossed fifty runs on more than one occasion, highlighting a systemic struggle at the crease. In Darwin, Bangladesh won by nine wickets after Australia's defeat, while at St George's Park in Gqeberha, South Africa claimed victory by an innings and 31 runs.
Despite these losses, individual performances have shone through, Cameron Green scored a defiant second-innings hundred against Bangladesh, and Travis Head struck 121 in the second innings at Gqeberha. Yet these efforts stood alone rather than part of a broader team recovery. In the first innings of those matches where Australia effectively lost, only Steven Smith passed fifty in Darwin. Head's succinct appraisal of Australia's 99 all out in the first innings at St George's Park captured the frustration.
"I think it's pretty clear on what we got wrong, we had a pretty s***house day," Head said as quoted by Cricinfo.
Why have Australia's partnerships collapsed?
Pat Cummins acknowledged during the post-match press conference that victories can mask underlying issues. Australia's two recent wins—a quickfire two-day encounter at Mackay and an impressive performance at Durban—centred on individual batting rather than collective strength. At Mackay, Australia's first-innings total of 210 proved sufficient for victory thanks to Mitchell Starc's decisive bowling, yet the batting collapsed to 146 for 7 in the second innings with only Cameron Green passing fifty.
At Kingsmead in Durban, Matt Renshaw's match tally of 272 runs stood head and shoulders above his team-mates, again highlighting the reliance on single performers. Head reflected on the pattern that has emerged across the series.
"Think we've spoken as a group going into the series that we've sort of had one individual each time. They've always been different individuals and we haven't been able to get that collective batting day that we would desire as a team," Head said.
How does momentum shape Australia's approach?
Building substantial partnerships has long been Australia's strength in Test cricket, yet that foundation has crumbled in recent months. Head articulated the team's awareness of this decline and the challenge of reversing it.
"It's something that the team have been really good at over a long period of time, is being able to build big partnerships, substantial partnerships that win games at cricket. We just haven't been able to find that in the last couple of months. It's very hard to put a finger on why. We're playing some exceptional attacks in some trying conditions but it's not a lack of trying," Head said.
The broader context reveals a deeper concern. Since the start of 2024, when Australia's batting order was reshaped following David Warner's retirement, the team has recorded only 11 century stands for wickets one through six. Among World Test Championship nations, only West Indies have fewer such partnerships. Coach Andrew McDonald bemoaned the batting order's inability to soak up pressure long enough to stem the tide following the 99 all out at Gqeberha, Australia's lowest first-innings score since South Africa rolled them for 85 at Hobart in 2016.
Momentum shapes how Australia approaches both attack and defence in challenging situations. Head explained the delicate balance required when pressure mounts.
"The game's all about momentum. Trying to gain momentum, trying to withstand momentum, trying to put pressure back on the opposition and how you do that is in different ways: do you suck back and defend, do you push forward and fight fire with fire? So that's that balancing act," Head said.
What pressure is Labuschagne facing?
Head acknowledged the pressure Marnus Labuschagne was experiencing after his second-innings dismissal at Gqeberha, when he lofted Simon Harmer to mid-on to end their 92-run stand. The dismissal came just 13 balls after Labuschagne had an lbw decision overturned on DRS with the ball missing leg stump by less than 5mm, a moment that visibly affected him.
"There's pressure on, it's pretty obvious to see, and obvious in the way he reacts. [He] got away with an [lbw] and you can see… he knows it was a big moment and he's disappointed. Nothing's ever guaranteed in the game, and I can't speak on what happens in the future, but you know he's a good player," Head said.
