Rohit Sharma has reflected on the people who shaped his entry into international cricket, crediting multiple figures for their contributions to his journey in Indian cricket. The India captain's international career has now spanned more than 19 years since his selection to the national team in 2007.
In a recent appearance on Sony TV's Family Full House with Rohit Sharma, the captain discussed how his selection came about and the individuals who played pivotal roles in launching his career. Dilip Vengsarkar, the former India captain, held the position of chairman of the selection committee when Rohit was picked for the national team.
During his show, Family Full House with Rohit Sharma on Sony TV, Rohit was asked, 'Who spotted you for Team India?' In response, Rohit acknowledged that several people had played a role in his journey, saying, 'That's an excellent question. Actually, quite a few people played a role in it'. He then mentioned former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar.
Rohit credits Vengsarkar for his India opportunity
Rohit went on to explain how Vengsarkar, who was the chairman of the selection committee when he earned his maiden India call-up, played a crucial role in his selection.
"When I was selected for the Indian team, Dilip Vengsarkar was the chairman of the selection committee, and he gave me the opportunity,” said Rohit.
The Indian batting star also expressed his lasting gratitude to Vengsarkar for giving him the chance to represent the country. Reflecting on the importance of that decision.
“I will be grateful to him for the rest of my life because, without him, I might never have got the opportunity to play for India,” said Rohit.
Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007, at the age of 20. The match was rain-affected, and India won by nine wickets. Batting at number 7, Rohit did not get an opportunity to bat as the team secured a comfortable victory. This debut marked the beginning of a career that would see him become one of India's most prolific batsmen across formats.
Rohit's early mentors and age-group coaching
Rohit also reflected on the early stages of his cricketing journey and acknowledged the role played by Vasu Paranjape in shaping his career.
“Before that, when I was playing age-group cricket, there was Vasu Sir,” Rohit credited.
Rohit has previously recalled meeting Paranjape at an Under-17 camp at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where 30 probables competed for 15 spots. Paranjape, who coached Mumbai’s age-group side, supported Rohit and advocated for him in discussions with the selectors and the team captain.
Paranjape passed away on August 30, 2021, at the age of 82, following a distinguished coaching career with Mumbai and India’s junior teams. Rohit has also spoken about how he continued to seek Paranjape’s feedback after his innings, often reaching out through the coach’s son, Jatin. This reflected the lasting influence Paranjape had on Rohit’s development as a cricketer.
