Afghanistan claimed a convincing 37-run victory over Zimbabwe in the opening T20I of their UAE series, played at Sharjah on October 27, 2026. Despite a difficult start that saw them reduced to 31 for 3 during the powerplay, Afghanistan recovered to post 177 all out in 19.5 overs. In reply, Zimbabwe were dismissed for 140 in 19.1 overs, giving the Blue Tigers an early series advantage.
The match analysis points firmly to Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai's explosive batting as the turning point. Coming in after the top order had crumbled, Ahmadzai struck a blistering 51 off just 20 balls, hitting four fours and four sixes, to shift the momentum decisively in Afghanistan's favour. His aggressive approach, combined with a steady contribution from Shahidullah Kamal, helped Afghanistan recover from that precarious position and build a competitive total. Afghanistan reached the 50-run mark in 9.3 overs before accelerating sharply through the middle and closing stages.
How did Ijaz Ahmadzai and Shahidullah Kamal rebuild Afghanistan's innings?
Ahmadzai's innings was built around a rapid 50-run partnership with Kamal that arrived off just 24 balls. During that stand, Ahmadzai contributed 37 runs while Kamal added 12, and together they provided the platform Afghanistan desperately needed after losing three wickets inside the powerplay. Afghanistan crossed the 100-run mark in 14.1 overs and moved past 150 in 17.5 overs before being bowled out for 177 with one delivery remaining in the innings.
Kamal finished with 46 off 42 balls, including two fours and three sixes, providing the steadiness that complemented Ahmadzai's aggression at the other end. Rashid Khan then delivered a devastating cameo at the death, smashing 30 off just 10 balls with one four and four sixes to push Afghanistan towards a total that would prove well beyond Zimbabwe's reach.
How did Zimbabwe's run chase fall apart?
Chasing 178 for victory, Zimbabwe made a relatively composed start, reaching 38 for 1 at the end of the six-over powerplay. However, Afghanistan's bowlers maintained consistent pressure through the middle overs, and Zimbabwe slipped to 56 for 3 by the 9.3-over mark as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Although Zimbabwe reached the 100-run mark in 14.4 overs, the required scoring rate continued to climb as further wickets fell. Afghanistan held firm during the closing stages and eventually dismissed Zimbabwe for 140 in 19.1 overs, sealing a 37-run win. Ahmadzai's explosive half-century proved the crucial contribution in Afghanistan's success as they took a 1-0 lead in the series. Rashid also took two wickets with the ball, complementing his cameo with the bat.
