India are set to take on New Zealand in a five-match T20I series, which is set to commence on October 22, 2026. The T20I World Champions come off a 2-2 draw against the West Indies, and head into their first away assignment since their 3-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe.
India hold a strong overall T20I record against New Zealand, with 19 wins, 11 losses and 1 tied match from 31 fixtures across all venues. When the contest moves to New Zealand, however, the balance shifts considerably. India have won 5 of 12 T20I matches played on New Zealand soil, with New Zealand winning 4 and 3 matches ending in ties. Of the three tied matches, two games went into super overs, with India winning both.
The overall head-to-head numbers confirm India's dominance in the bilateral format, but their away performances in New Zealand have been far more competitive, with the hosts testing India hard across multiple tours.
What are India's most memorable T20I wins in New Zealand?
India's 2020 tour of New Zealand stands out as their most successful on New Zealand soil. They won all five of five matches, including consecutive seven-wicket victories in Auckland. Two of the five matches ended in ties, and India claimed both through Super Overs.
On January 29, 2020, at Hamilton, both sides finished on 179 at the end of regulation play. Rohit Sharma settled the Super Over by hitting two sixes from the last two deliveries, giving India the win. Two days later, on January 31, 2020, at Wellington, the scores were level again at 165. India won the Super Over once more, with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli at the crease to see them home.
India produced another commanding display on November 20, 2022, at Mount Maunganui, when Suryakumar Yadav blazed his way to an unbeaten 111 from 51 deliveries as India posted 191 for 6. New Zealand were bowled out for 126 in reply, handing India a 65-run victory. The other completed match on that 2022 tour ended in a tie at Napier.
When have India struggled in New Zealand in T20Is?
India's record in New Zealand has not always been straightforward. On their 2009 tour, they endured consecutive defeats, which remains one of their more difficult spells in the country in the shortest format.
The 2019 tour also presented challenges. India lost two of their first three matches, including a heavy 80-run defeat in Wellington. They recovered to win by seven wickets in Auckland but then fell to a narrow four-run loss in Hamilton, finishing the series on the back foot.
These results show that while India have produced outstanding performances in New Zealand across different eras, the conditions and the home side have consistently made them work hard for every result.
