Former Australian batter Simon Katich believes several players in the national team could be playing for their Test careers in the ongoing second match against South Africa in Gqeberha. The visitors have struggled to cope with the Proteas' bowling attack and are facing the possibility of a defeat after being forced to follow on.
Australia ended Day 4 at 156/4 in their second innings, still trailing South Africa by 170 runs. Marnus Labuschagne, Nic Maddinson and Beau Webster have come under scrutiny following their disappointing performances, with questions being raised about their places in the side.
Labuschagne, in particular, has struggled to convert promising starts into substantial scores. The right-handed batter managed 39 in the second innings but threw away his wicket while attempting an aggressive shot against spinner Simon Harmer. His dismissal came when Australia were beginning to rebuild their innings, having lost only one wicket for 100 runs.
The batter was looking relatively comfortable alongside Travis Head before attempting to hit Harmer down the ground. However, the high-risk shot ended his stay at the crease and drew criticism from Katich, who questioned the decision given Australia's precarious position in the match.
"There are a number of players playing for their careers in this innings," Katich said on SEN radio. "Only he knows what was going through his mind when he tried to take Harmer down the ground, against the breeze, when Australia are trying to play for a draw.
"How will the Australian selectors view that dismissal? He's been given plenty of rope over the past few years, when plenty of others haven't, but he has," he added.
Labuschagne has been under pressure for some time, having failed to register a Test century since July 2023. Although he has managed to get starts in recent innings, his inability to convert them into big scores has become a major concern for the Australian team management.
Maddinson, who retained his place in the playing XI despite criticism, has also struggled, scoring 0 and 8 in the second Test. Meanwhile, Webster has been unable to make a significant contribution, adding to the pressure on Australia's middle order.
Andrew McDonald disappointed with Marnus Labuschagne's dismissal
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald also expressed his disappointment with Labuschagne's dismissal, pointing out that the batter needed to capitalise on his start, especially when the team was attempting to save the Test.
McDonald acknowledged that Labuschagne had put in considerable effort to get himself set but stressed that he needed to convert those starts into substantial contributions. The coach also identified the period after reaching 30 runs as a recurring problem for the batter.
"You saw what we saw," McDonald said.
"For me, the option is there if the ball is in the right area. But in that scenario, there probably are some shots that players would take back. He did a lot of hard work once again. I feel like I am on repeat around the amount of 30s that he has got. That has become a danger period for him. We had a good partnership going and were starting to claw ourselves back into the game, albeit a long way behind.
"When you do that hard work, you've got to cash in, and unfortunately, that wasn't to be the case for Marn. We were disappointed, and he will be too," the head coach added.
Labuschagne's latest failure has increased the scrutiny on his position in the Australian side, with the selectors likely to face questions about the team's batting combination if the visitors fail to recover in Gqeberha.
