The Men in Blue secured a 1-0 series advantage by chasing down New Zealand's 226-run total with two balls remaining in the opening T20I at Hagley Oval. India's aggressive approach in the powerplay, combined with composed middle-order batting, proved decisive in a high-scoring encounter. Let's examine three individual battles that could determine the outcome of Saturday's second T20I, which will be played at the same venue on Saturday, October 24.
Several key matchups between batters and bowlers will influence the match trajectory. The contests between established performers and emerging talent will test both technical skill and tactical awareness as each side seeks to level or extend the series lead.
Sanju Samson vs Mitchell Santner
Sanju Samson was named Player of the Match in the first game after scoring 67 off 33 balls, relying on timing and placement rather than brute force. The wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated three fifties across his last six T20I appearances, demonstrating consistent form.
However, Mitchell Santner dismissed him in the opening encounter by bowling a flat delivery that skidded after pitching, prompting Samson to chop the ball back onto the stumps. The New Zealand captain possesses the skill to outfox batters through subtle variations in flight and pace. Samson would benefit from exercising patience and avoiding aggressive strokes against Santner's deceptive bowling.
Finn Allen vs Axar Patel
Finn Allen struck 45 runs off 24 balls in the first T20I, striking five fours and two sixes while attacking from the outset. Should Allen find his rhythm early again, he will seek to build on that foundation and compile a substantial innings.
Axar Patel did not perform effectively with the ball in the opening match but succeeded in removing Allen. The right-handed batter has fallen to left-arm orthodox bowlers on several occasions during his career. Allen must remain cautious against Axar's intelligent variations and tight lines.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs Lockie Ferguson

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to replace the injured Ishan Kishan, who has been ruled out of the second T20I. The 15-year-old will be eager to return to competitive cricket after his last appearance in the Asian Games final against Pakistan on October 3. He will attempt to impose himself on New Zealand's bowling attack during the powerplay phase.

Lockie Ferguson represents a significant challenge for the teenager. The 35-year-old right-arm seamer relies on pace and bounce to trouble batters. Sooryavanshi should anticipate short-pitched deliveries and prepare for Ferguson to test his technique once more. If Ferguson executes his plans with precision, he can create difficulties for the Indian opener.
