The mass exodus at Sussex has gathered further pace with the news that Grant Flower, the club's batting coach, is joining Surrey as an assistant coach.

Flower, 55, spent five seasons at Hove, where he was instrumental in honing the techniques of a range of young Sussex batters. In 2024, the club achieved promotion to Division One of the County Championship, and finished a creditable third in the recently completed 2026 campaign.

However, back in February, Sussex were placed in special measures by the ECB after reporting a £1.33 million operating loss for the 2024-25 financial year, and they have endured a steady talent drain ever since.

Last week, Paul Farbrace, their outgoing head coach, announced he would be joining Lancashire as director of cricket, just weeks before he had been due to step into the same role at Hove on a part-time basis, to ease the club's transition.

Other prominent departures from the club include Henry Crocombe, the highly-rated seamer who was on Monday awarded a two-year ECB central contract, and John Simpson, their wicketkeeper, who is heading to Nottinghamshire.

Flower, the former Zimbabwe batter, had previously worked extensively in international coaching, including stints with Sri Lanka and prior to that, Pakistan, whom he helped to victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy.

He will begin work at The Oval in November, alongside head coach Gareth Batty, whose previous assistant, Jim Troughton, is returning to his former county, Warwickshire. Flower's arrival comes at the end of a tough season for Surrey, who flirted with relegation after three titles and a close-run second-place in their previous four County Championship campaigns.

"I'm really excited about joining Surrey and taking on this new challenge," Flower said. "Surrey is a club with a fantastic reputation, a strong cricketing culture and an incredibly talented and experienced group of players and coaches. The opportunity to be part of such a successful and ambitious club, with a proud history and a clear commitment to excellence, is something I'm very much looking forward to.

"Surrey has consistently set high standards both on and off the field, and I'm excited about the opportunity to bring my experience, contribute fresh ideas and work alongside such a talented group. I'm passionate about developing players, helping them reach their full potential and being part of a team that continues to challenge for trophies.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the players and staff in November, building strong relationships and getting straight to work as we prepare for the 2027 season. It's an exciting new chapter, and I can't wait to get started."

On the timing of his departure, Flower added that he would look back on his five years at Sussex with "great fondness", but acknowledged the club's off-field pressures had played a significant part in his decision.

"Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Given the financial challenges currently facing the club, I have made the difficult decision to move on. While it is sad to say goodbye, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have been offered at Surrey and look forward to embracing this exciting new chapter in my coaching career."

Speaking on behalf of Sussex, Farbrace praised Flower's role in "helping to develop, nurture and improve every player he has worked with", while Alec Stewart, Surrey's director of men's cricket, added: "We're fortunate to be securing someone of Grant's calibre and experience for the club. He will help our batting across all formats moving forward."
