The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed its updated central contract list for England Men's international cricket, covering the 2026-2027 cycle. Thirty players have been awarded full central contracts, with a further nine players receiving England Development contracts, bringing the total number of players under formal ECB agreements to 39.
The expansion marks a notable shift from the 2025-26 cycle, in which the ECB maintained a single combined list of 30 contracted players without a separate development tier. For 2026-27, the board has retained 30 players on full central contracts while introducing the development contract category as a distinct and formal intermediate level, offering players on the fringes of the senior setup structured recognition and support short of a full central deal.
The ECB made the announcement through its official channels, simultaneously confirming updates to the coaching structure for the England Men's international setup. The development contract tier is designed to create a more graduated pathway between county cricket and full central contract status, giving the board greater flexibility in managing its talent pipeline.
Which players have received a central contract for 2026-27?
The ECB has confirmed the following players on England Men central contracts for 2026-2027, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Matthew Fisher, Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Ollie Robinson, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue.
The players on a two-year central contract running through 30 September 2028 are Root, Brook, Archer, Atkinson, Baker, Bethell, Cox, Crocombe, Curran, Jacks, and Tongue.
How does the 2026-27 structure differ from the previous cycle?
The most significant structural change from 2025-26 is the formal introduction of a two-tier contracted system. Previously, the ECB operated a single list of 30 contracted players with no development category. The 2026-27 arrangement places 30 players on full central contracts and a further nine on England Development contracts, creating a broader and more graduated support framework. They are, James Coles, Mason Crane, Ben McKinney, Liam Patterson-White, Thomas Rew, and Matthew Revis.
The development contract tier gives the ECB a formal mechanism to support players who are progressing towards senior international cricket without committing to a full central deal. This expanded structure of 39 contracted players in total represents a meaningful increase in the board's investment in its playing depth.
