Chennai Super Kings have brought Albie Morkel back into their setup, confirming the 45-year-old South African allrounder as assistant coach for IPL 2027. He slots into a restructured backroom team at the franchise, which is now headed by Zaheer Khan, as CSK pursue a sixth IPL title.
Morkel's ties with the Super Kings run deep. He was part of the squad from the very first IPL season in 2008 and went on to represent the franchise until 2013, turning out in 92 matches. During that period, he contributed to back-to-back IPL title victories in 2010 and 2011, and was also a member of the CSK side that claimed the Champions League T20 in 2010.
CSK marked the occasion with a post on X.
"The lion behind some of Chepauk's most unforgettable moments is ready for a new innings! 💛 An OG Super King from 2008, a key member of our back-to-back IPL triumphs in 2010 and 2011! Albie Morkel's story with the Super Kings continues! Welcome aboard, Albie!," the franchise wrote on X.
What was Morkel doing before this appointment?
Morkel had been steadily developing his coaching profile in franchise cricket before this move. In July this year, he was elevated to the head coach role at Joburg Super Kings in the SA20, stepping into the position vacated by Stephen Fleming, who had stepped down from the job.
His decision to join CSK as assistant coach therefore marks a transition from leading a franchise in his own right to operating within a larger, more established coaching structure at one of the IPL's most successful sides.
Who else has joined CSK's new coaching setup?
Morkel will work alongside Gareth Batty in the CSK dugout. Batty, who had been serving as head coach of Surrey, departed that role to take up an assistant coach position at the franchise. Meanwhile, as reported on September 29, former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma has been confirmed as CSK's new bowling coach, further strengthening the support staff ahead of the new season.
James Foster and Sridharan Sriram are set to continue with Chennai Super Kings as Fielding Coach and Assistant Coach, respectively.
With the coaching group now largely assembled, the immediate task for the new setup will be to settle the squad retention list before the mini auction pencilled in for December. The decisions made in that window will shape the playing group that Zaheer Khan, Morkel, Batty and Mohit Sharma will work with when IPL 2027 gets underway.
