Bhuvneshwar Kumar has returned to India's T20I squad for the five-match series against New Zealand, marking his first international appearance in nearly four years. The 36-year-old pacer last represented India in a T20I against New Zealand in Napier on November 22, 2022. His recall comes after impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in recent IPL seasons, where he took 28 wickets in the 2026 campaign.
Former Black Caps fast bowler Shane Bond has expressed strong backing for Bhuvneshwar's inclusion in the squad. Bond spoke about the veteran pacer's potential impact on the upcoming series, which begins on October 22 in Christchurch and runs until November 1.
"It's great to see Bhuvi back in the international circuit. He's a great bowler and has been so good in the IPL for so long. What it's like to have someone like him in the team is just a calming influence. He's bowled in big moments so often and always is a man who looks up for it and always looks calm and composed in those moments," said Bond as quoted by NDTV Sports.
"It's always nice to have a senior bowler in your team, particularly in those death overs where, alongside the captain, you can lean on him. So, he'll be stoked and deserves his chance back in the team. I'm looking forward to watching him bowl, particularly in conditions that might swing and seam because he can be lethal with the new ball, let alone being a quality finisher," he added.
Why fast bowling will decide the series?
Bhuvneshwar has an established T20I record, having played 87 T20Is and taken 90 wickets at an average of 23.10 with an economy rate of 6.96. His experience in high-pressure situations and consistent performances in the IPL underscore why selectors have brought him back into the fold for this series. The series will be played across multiple venues in New Zealand, with early-season conditions expected to favour pace bowlers.
Bond emphasised that fast bowling will be the decisive factor in determining the outcome of the series. He highlighted the mixture of pitch types and ground dimensions that teams will encounter during the tour.
"Usually in New Zealand, that's the difference-maker. The better-performing fast-bowling group is likely to win you a series. It's early season here and you're playing on a mixture of drop-in pitches and traditional wickets in Christchurch and other varied-sized grounds. But I'm certainly expecting there to be bounce and some sideways movement," Bond said.
How will New Zealand conditions favour pace bowlers?
The length and movement available to fast bowlers will be crucial in determining outcomes. Bond explained the technical aspects of bowling in New Zealand conditions and the specific challenges that arise when pitches offer pace and movement.
"Generally, with the length in T20Is, it doesn't change too much. You're looking to hit a 6-7 metre length and if you've got any sort of sideways movement and bounce in any wicket, that's generally the toughest length to bowl. Because if you find that length consistently and the ball does move, then it becomes very difficult. So that's probably the unknown going into this series, particularly at this time of the year. There is going to be a lot of movement for the fast bowlers and what sort of impact that may have on the series remains to be seen," Bond added.
Bond also highlighted the strength of India's fast-bowling unit and the quality of individual performers within the squad. He noted that the Indian bowling attack will be built around pace bowlers rather than spinners.
"Obviously, guys like Prince Yadav had a very good IPL. Overall, the Indian bowling attack is a fast-bowling unit. They've certainly got pace and if you look ahead to the next World Cup, which will be played in New Zealand and Australia, there's an opportunity to bring some young bowlers over who could potentially make that team and allow them to experience the conditions, training environments and just what it's like to travel around New Zealand," said Bond.
What role will ground dimensions play?
Ground dimensions and pitch characteristics will play a significant role in shaping the tactical approach of both teams. Eden Park and Wellington present different challenges due to their drop-in wickets, while the larger boundaries at some venues will influence batting strategies.
"Even though the wicket has pace and bounce, it generally makes it difficult for spinners to bowl, and teams usually try to hit over the top because the bigger boundary is square of the wicket. Eden Park and Wellington have drop-in wickets, so they present a slightly different challenge. Christchurch is probably a more traditional-sized cricket ground with a normal cricket block, so it's a good place to start the series. But ultimately, if the wickets are true and the grounds are small, there are going to be plenty of runs. You just have to turn up and execute your plans," said Bond.
Both teams have adapted to high-scoring cricket through their exposure to the IPL, and the series is expected to feature attacking cricket, particularly as the tournament progresses. Bond predicted that teams will find their rhythm as the series develops.
"Both teams are pretty used to that now when you see the volume of runs scored in the IPL. So expect some high-scoring games, particularly in the back end of the series when the teams find their feet. That's what the crowd wants to see," Bond concluded.
