Daren Sammy, West Indies head coach, has called on his players to deliver strong performances in the final stretch of the World Test Championship cycle, arguing that on-field success would strengthen their hand when negotiating with the board. Cricket West Indies recently announced a 25 percent reduction in international players' retainer fees as part of measures to address what it described as a financial, developmental and competitive crisis. West Indies players have not yet signed national contracts for the upcoming period.
Sammy acknowledged the financial pressures facing the team but stressed that the focus in the dressing room remains on delivering strong performances. Speaking ahead of the opening Test against Bangladesh scheduled to begin at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on October 28, Sammy explained how the squad responded during the recent India tour despite the pay cut announcement.
"No, if you look at the way we played in the India series when the news (about the pay cut) was put to the players and how they responded in that India series shows the drive, the passion, the willingness to help turn around West Indies cricket," Sammy said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
What are the stakes for West Indies in the WTC cycle?
Sammy acknowledged the reality of the board's financial position while emphasising the importance of using on-field success as a tool for negotiation. He pointed out that the International Cricket Council has invested significant prize money in the World Test Championship, with additional incentives available for teams finishing in the top five.
"I think there's reality and there's understanding where you are as a professional, as a board, and there's no secret where we are obviously financially. My word to the guys, especially in Test Championship, if you finish top five there's extra incentives. ICC has invested a lot of money in World Test Championships in terms of prize money, and it's an opportunity for our boys to come up from number eight, which we've finished the last two cycles," Sammy explained.
Sammy has challenged the players to improve their standing through strong performances on the field. He highlighted how the white-ball teams performed well during the India tour and expressed hope that the red-ball team could replicate that success in Bangladesh.
"And what I've challenged the guys to do is to put ourselves in a better position to negotiate and attract sponsors by the performances we put on the field. And I thought the white-ball teams did that extremely well in India and hopefully we could do that as a red-ball team here in Bangladesh," Sammy said.
The West Indies head coach stressed that both teams face high stakes in the upcoming series. Bangladesh currently sit fourth in the World Test Championship standings and will be looking to secure maximum points to strengthen their chances of reaching the final.
"I think the stakes are high for both teams. Everybody is playing Test cricket to win. When the Test Championship started we had our goals where we wanted to finish. Looking at what we have, the opposition, and we're in a very good position to achieve that goal," Sammy said.
Sammy reflected on the team's journey in the current World Test Championship cycle, noting that West Indies finished eighth in the previous two cycles. He emphasised the importance of understanding the processes required to improve the team's standing.
"And that's life. I've spoken about it many times, what does success mean for our team. For you guys and the people outside it might be something different, but we understand the processes and the steps that we have to take to get to where we're going. And I think all teams are making those little steps, taking those little steps to get us to where we want to be," Sammy said.
Why is the Bangladesh series crucial for West Indies?
West Indies have not lost a series in 2026, a significant achievement that Sammy highlighted as the team prepares for their final Test Championship assignment. He stressed the importance of maximising the remaining opportunities in the cycle.
"The expectations are always there. Like I said, the way we've played Test cricket this year, we've not lost a series this year. It's a long time we've gone through a year without losing a series. And it's our last series in the Test Championship. The message to the guys, give it all," Sammy said.
With ten possible days of Test cricket remaining in the World Test Championship cycle, Sammy called on his players to deliver their best performances. He expressed confidence in the team's preparation and readiness for the challenge ahead.
"Ten possible days of Test cricket left in this cycle for us and just go out there and give it your all. Whatever motivates you, use that to go out and get performances. We've prepared really well," Sammy said.
Sammy acknowledged that West Indies would miss the in-form Shai Hope, who is unavailable for the series. However, he stressed that Hope's absence would provide other players with an opportunity to step up and prove themselves.
"Shai Hope, we've seen what he's done. Since he's played all formats, he's excellent for us. But so too Justin Greaves, Jangu, John Campbell, the way he's improved, Brandon King coming into Test cricket, Warrican, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales. So we don't rely on one person. We miss Shai Hope but it's an opportunity for somebody else to step up and make a name for themselves," Sammy said.
Shamar Joseph missed the practice match due to a stomach upset, but Sammy expressed optimism about the fast bowler's availability for the opening Test. He noted that Joseph's commitment and work ethic suggest he will be ready when the match begins.
"(Joseph) is running quite hard in the nets today. One thing I know about Shamar, once the bell rings he makes himself available, and I'm going to get 110 percent from him every single time. So hopefully from all reports we're selecting from 15 men and yeah, I'm excited to finish the Test Championship against a team like Bangladesh who have proven to be extremely difficult to beat at home, especially coming from some good results in this year's Test cycle. So hopefully we entertain, but when we entertain West Indies come out victorious," Sammy concluded.
