India play Pakistan for the men's cricket gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday 3 October at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. Both reached the final with one completed match each after rain wiped out the quarter-finals. There is no reserve day: if the final is washed out, both sides receive gold.

Key takeaways

  • India and Pakistan meet in the Asian Games men's cricket final on 3 October 2026 at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, their first meeting in an Asian Games men's final.
  • All four quarter-finals were abandoned without a toss, so each finalist has played only one completed match at these Games: its semi-final on 1 October.
  • India beat Sri Lanka by 124 runs after Ishan Kishan's 80 not out from 46 balls; Pakistan beat Bangladesh by six wickets in a match cut to 13 overs.
  • As at 2 October 2026, India lead the men's T20I head-to-head 13 wins to 3, with one tie, across 17 matches.
  • There is no reserve day for the final: if it is washed out, India and Pakistan share the gold medal, unlike Hangzhou 2023 when India were awarded gold on ranking.

India and Pakistan meet for the men's cricket gold medal at the Asian Games on Saturday 3 October 2026, at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It is the first time the two sides have met in an Asian Games men's final.

It is also an unusual final in one respect. Rain has shaped this tournament so heavily that each finalist has played only one completed match at these Games. This preview looks at what that one match showed, what the long T20I head-to-head says, and how the weather rules could decide the medal before a ball is bowled.

All figures below were checked on 2 October 2026 against the sources listed at the end of the post.

How did India and Pakistan reach the final?

Both sides skipped the preliminary group stage. The four highest-ranked teams in the ICC men's T20I team rankings at the cut-off (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) were seeded straight into the quarter-finals.

Then the rain arrived. All four quarter-finals were abandoned without a toss, and each seeded side went through as the higher-ranked team. India were drawn against Afghanistan and Pakistan against Hong Kong, China. Neither game started.

That left the semi-finals on 1 October as the only completed cricket either finalist has played in Japan.

What did India's semi-final against Sri Lanka show?

India's 124-run win was built on one innings and one opening spell. Ishan Kishan made 80 not out from 46 balls, with four fours and five sixes, to carry India to 169 for 7.

Jasprit Bumrah then took two wickets in the first over of Sri Lanka's reply and finished with 2 for 7. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 45 in 9.5 overs.

It is worth keeping that result in proportion. A team bowled out inside ten overs tells you India's attack was sharp on the day. It tells you far less about how India's middle order copes under pressure, because it barely had to bat in a tight chase or set a total against good bowling at the death.

What did Pakistan's semi-final against Bangladesh show?

Pakistan's semi-final began late because of a wet outfield and was cut to 13 overs a side. Bangladesh made 111 for 7, with Sufyan Moqim taking 3 for 26.

Pakistan reached the target in 11.3 overs for the loss of four wickets. Vice-captain Abdul Samad finished it with 30 not out from 15 balls.

So Pakistan arrive having chased in a shortened game, under the kind of stop-start conditions that may return on Saturday. That is not a small thing. A side that has already batted with a revised target and a compressed innings has at least rehearsed the scenario the weather could force on both teams.

What does the India v Pakistan T20I head-to-head say?

Across all men's T20 Internationals, the record is heavily in India's favour. As at 2 October 2026, ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru lists 17 matches between the sides.

Pakistan's most recent T20I win over India came in Dubai in September 2022. On Statsguru's list, India have won all six T20Is between the sides since then, the latest by 61 runs in Colombo on 15 February 2026. That run of six is a CPL count from the Statsguru results table.

Head-to-head records come with a caveat here. Both squads are different from the sides that played most of those 17 matches. Pakistan's 15 named in June included four players yet to play a T20I: Akif Javed, Ali Raza, Maaz Sadaqat and Saad Masood. A long record between two nations is context, not a forecast for a single game in Japan.

Who are the players to watch in the final?

Five players stand out from what each side has done so far, and from the roles their boards gave them.

  • Ishan Kishan (India). Unbeaten 80 from 46 balls in the semi-final, the highest score either finalist has made at these Games.
  • Jasprit Bumrah (India). Two wickets in the first over of the semi-final and figures of 2 for 7. How Pakistan's top order handles his first two overs may shape the innings.
  • Sahibzada Farhan (Pakistan captain). When the squad was named in June, he had 1,305 runs in 46 T20Is, with two hundreds and 10 fifties.
  • Abdul Samad (Pakistan vice-captain). Closed out the semi-final chase with 30 not out from 15 balls.
  • Sufyan Moqim (Pakistan). Took 3 for 26 against Bangladesh, the best bowling figures for Pakistan in their only completed game.

India's squad also includes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old opener whose selection drew attention when the BCCI named the side in June.

How could rain decide the gold medal?

This is the most important context for Saturday. The organisers' rules for the final, as reported by Outlook India from details confirmed to The Indian Express, come down to this (CPL's summary):

No reserve day. If the final cannot be played at all, India and Pakistan are both awarded gold. If play starts, a result needs at least five overs per side under the DLS method; a tie goes to a Super Over.

That differs from the last Asian Games. In Hangzhou in 2023, India's final against Afghanistan was washed out and India were awarded gold as the higher-ranked side. This time a washout would mean a shared gold and no silver medallist.

The tournament's weather record so far shows why this matters. Four quarter-finals were lost without a toss, and Pakistan's semi-final was trimmed to 13 overs. A shortened match puts more weight on the toss, on wickets in hand, and on bowlers who can operate in the first few overs.

What selection questions do both sides face?

The BCCI's 15-player squad, announced on 6 June 2026, was built with flexibility in mind. Two decisions stand out.

  1. Keeping and the top order. India named two wicketkeepers, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. After Kishan's 80 not out, the question is how both fit alongside Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi in the top order.
  2. How much spin. The squad carries Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi. Conditions after rain may favour seam early, which could change the balance India choose.

For Pakistan, the question is whether to keep the side that won the semi-final. The 13-over chase gave little information on how their bowlers handle a full 20 overs, and a full-length match against Bumrah and a deep India batting order is a different test.

What is at stake beyond the medal?

For India, this is a chance to defend the gold won in Hangzhou, this time with a match actually completed. For Pakistan, it is a first Asian Games men's final against India and a chance to end a run of T20I defeats in the fixture.

India's batting coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar told the ICC that the occasion should be treated like any other international, while recognising that it counts towards India's medal tally.
